Safety tips for service providers &

tradespeople

Whether you’ve continued to work as an essential worker, or been on hiatus recently during the lockdown, now it’s time to get back to business...albeit in a slightly different way.

The COVID-19 climate has created a need for safe work processes to keep you and your customers safe. Whether you’re a plumber or electrician that provides services in peoples’ homes, or a repair technician or landscaper that works outside, we want to make sure you get back to work safely.

With expert guidelines from OSHA and AIHA and safety products from Vistaprint, here's what you can do to create a safe working experience from start to finish (for yourself, your employees, and your customers).

Implement enhanced cleaning practices.

Even if you don't operate out of a traditional brick-and-mortar space, you can start implementing new procedures to prevent the spread of germs.

  •   Create a worksheet or checklist to keep track of how       often        all  equipment is cleaned.

  •   Encourage employees to wash their clothing and                                face coverings daily at a high temperature.

  •   Increase your cleaning frequency when working.

  •   Require disinfection for all shared equipment andtools,                  including vehicles.

  •   Use disposable equipment where possible.

  •   If you’re vacuuming, use a HEPA filter.

Help keep your employees

safe.

From new procedures to protective gear, there's a lot you can do to make sure your workers stay safe on the job. Provide them with masks and gloves, hand sanitizer (or a place to wash their hands), and up-to-date information about social distancing processes to follow.

Importantly, encourage employees to stay home if they're not feeling well.

Communicate with your customers.

Whether digitally or with traditional marketing methods, let customers know that you're up and running - safely. Use these tools to tell people what you're doing to protect your staff and your customers, and encourage clients to stay in communication with you, too.

Keep your website up-to-date.
Dedicate a page on your website to explain what COVID-19 safety measures you're taking. If you don’t have a website yet, now is a great time to get started so you can be found online.

And if you like to connect with customers through social media channels, create a post explaining that you've reopened and are taking the recommended safety measures to get back to business.

Remember - safety is a two-way street. Ask that clients tell you if they're not feeling well, and reschedule appointments (without a customer penalty) if they're showing any signs of illness.

Minimize contact with customers

Bring as much of your own equipment to job sites as possible.
To prevent spreading germs and cross-contamination, bring your own supplies - even things like trash bags, pens, and bottled water.

Perform a consultation before the actual service date.
Connect with the customer over video chat to get more information before you arrive at the job site - maybe they can give you a close-up of their broken dishwasher, or a better feel for their landscaping needs. This way, you won't have to spend as much time in their home and can get right to work.

Maintain safe social distances.
Encourage any on-site conversations between worker and customer take place outdoors when possible, or else with a 6' distance.

Encourage digital payments and pre-pay options.
Try to set up card payments to limit physical touchpoints. Or, offer a pay-ahead system so employees can work without having to worry about handling payment when on-site with customers.
