Heat transfer can be done in several ways, such as digital appliqué transfers, inkjet transfers, vinyl transfers, and dye-sublimation transfers, etc. But we will focus on the commercial heat transfer for now:

Light Transfer Printing

Light transfer paper is basically used for light colored shirts, mainly white ones, or surfaces with light or pale colors. Both are papers in which you can print your design on the paper surface through an inkjet printer.

With light transfer papers you print the image, in reverse or mirrored, then putting the transfer after having the printed side on your shirt, with your image facing down directly in it and the back part of the backing sheet is facing your direction. After having positioned it you then apply pressure through your heat press. After is cools down, you carefully remove the backing sheet and now you have your image imprinted on your shirt.

Dark Transfer Printing

Dark transfers are opaque after ironing, which means that any areas left blank will remain white even on dark colors. Dark Transfers on light fabrics: ✓ Dark Transfers can also be used on light fabrics, and look just as nice.

Because the Dark Transfers are opaque, keep in mind that any borders around your design will show up as white. On dark fabrics, this might not be the look you are hoping for.

Rubberized Vinyl Printing

Silhouette Cutting Machine & Heat Transfer Vinyl. It can be used on certain fabrics/materials to create design. It comes in a roll or sheet form with an adhesive backing so it can be cut, weeded, and placed on a substrate for heat application. Heat Transfer Vinyl is made in single colors and also has special options such as patterned, glitter, flocked, holographic, & glow in the dark. This printing has no minimum order required.

Vinyl printing is best suited for simple graphics. If you’re looking to create basic shapes or text-based designs, this is the method to use. Need to print jersey numbers for your high school soccer team? Excellent! Want a sleek photograph of the Penguins of Madagascar on your t-shirt? This method just won’t cut it. With vinyl printing, there’s no way you can come up with true gradients (blending of colors); fine details will easily get lost.
